Retaining Wall Cost Guide for Broken Arrow and Tulsa Area Homeowners
Retaining walls solve real problems on Broken Arrow properties — holding back hillside grades, creating level planting beds, preventing erosion along drainage channels, and creating terraced spaces for patios and outdoor living. The cost varies significantly based on what the wall is made from, how tall it needs to be, what the soil conditions are, and how accessible the site is.
This guide gives you realistic cost ranges for different wall types in the Broken Arrow/Tulsa market so you can budget accurately before getting estimates.
Factors That Drive Retaining Wall Cost
Before looking at per-material costs, understand what drives the wide range in retaining wall pricing:
- Wall height: Taller walls require more material, more batter (backward lean), and often engineered drainage systems. A 5-foot wall is dramatically more expensive than a 3-foot wall of the same length.
- Length: Linear cost is fairly predictable; the base and footing prep cost is largely fixed regardless of length.
- Drainage: Oklahoma clay doesn’t drain naturally. Every retaining wall needs drainage behind it — drain pipe, gravel backfill, and filter fabric. Inadequate drainage is the most common cause of retaining wall failure.
- Site access: Walls accessible from a flat, open area are faster to build. Walls accessed through narrow gates, down slopes, or in cramped conditions cost more in labor.
- Soil type: Broken Arrow’s heavy clay requires more drainage work than sandy soil. Some sites require geogrid reinforcement for taller walls.
- Grade removal: If the wall requires significant earth excavation and removal, that adds cost beyond the wall construction itself.
Retaining Wall Types and Cost Ranges
Concrete Segmental Block (Most Common)
Allan Block, Versa-Lok, and similar manufactured concrete blocks are the workhorses of residential retaining walls in northeast Oklahoma. They’re durable, come in multiple face textures and colors, have predictable installation costs, and are designed with drainage systems in mind.
Cost range: $30–$50 per square foot of wall face
Example: A 3-foot-tall, 50-foot wall (150 sq ft face) = $4,500–$7,500 installed
The low end of this range represents straightforward flat-site installs with easy access. The high end reflects tight access, significant drainage work, or premium block products.
Natural Boulder Wall
Large limestone or sandstone boulders stacked in a batter pattern create walls that look natural and permanent. They’re particularly effective along creek channels, hillside edges, and anywhere a naturalistic look is preferred. Boulder walls are dry-stacked — no mortar — so they flex with freeze-thaw cycles without cracking.
Cost range: $40–$70 per square foot of wall face
The higher cost reflects the equipment needed to move boulders (skid steer or mini excavator) and the skill involved in fitting irregular stones.
Poured Concrete Wall
Formed and poured concrete walls are engineered solutions for higher walls, walls near structures, or walls where a clean flat surface is desired. They’re typically used for walls over 5–6 feet where block systems would require extensive geogrid reinforcement. Often faced with stone veneer after pouring.
Cost range: $45–$80 per square foot (unfaced); add $15–$25 per sq ft for stone veneer
Poured walls at this height typically require engineering drawings and permits.
Treated Timber Wall
Railroad ties or pressure-treated timbers were the standard retaining wall material for decades. They’re lower cost initially, but modern lumber preservatives aren’t as long-lasting as the old CCA-treated wood, and timber walls in Oklahoma’s humid summers typically need replacement in 15–25 years. We don’t recommend timber for walls over 3 feet or walls where longevity is a priority.
Cost range: $20–$35 per square foot
Lower upfront cost with higher lifetime cost when replacement is factored in.
What’s Included in Retaining Wall Installation
A proper retaining wall installation includes:
- Grade excavation behind the wall alignment
- Compacted base course or trench footing depending on wall height
- Drainage pipe (perforated) at wall base
- Clean gravel backfill behind wall
- Filter fabric to prevent clay migration into gravel
- Wall construction with proper batter
- Cap course
- Topsoil restoration behind wall
Any quote that doesn’t include drainage should be viewed with skepticism — a wall without proper drainage will fail, regardless of how well the stones are stacked.
