Signs Your Retaining Wall Is Failing in Oklahoma — VistaScapes

Retaining wall failure in Oklahoma does not happen overnight — it announces itself with warning signs that, if caught early, allow repair before a minor problem becomes a major structural failure. VistaScapes Design & Build has assessed and rebuilt many failing retaining walls throughout Broken Arrow, Tulsa, and surrounding communities. Here is what to watch for. Call 918-779-1317 if your retaining wall shows any of these signs.

Warning Sign 1: The Wall Is Leaning Forward

A retaining wall that is leaning or tilting toward the retained soil means hydrostatic pressure is building up behind the wall faster than it can drain. This is the most common retaining wall failure sign in Oklahoma’s clay soil environment. Clay retains water like a sponge, and after significant rain events, the water pressure against the back of the wall can be enormous.

A wall with more than 1 to 2 inches of forward lean should be evaluated by a retaining wall contractor immediately. Walls that have leaned significantly often have compromised footings and cannot simply be pushed back — they typically need to be rebuilt with proper drainage installed.

Warning Sign 2: Cracks in the Wall Face

Vertical cracks in a mortared retaining wall, or gaps opening between individual dry-stack stones, indicate the wall is moving. This movement is caused by soil settling, root intrusion, or — most commonly in Oklahoma — freeze-thaw cycles working on water that has accumulated in the wall structure. Hairline cracks may be cosmetic, but cracks more than 1/4 inch wide in a mortared wall should be evaluated.

Warning Sign 3: Water Coming Out the Front of the Wall

This actually means your wall’s drainage is working — weep holes or gaps in the wall face are allowing water to escape rather than build up behind the wall. However, if water is seeping through the wall face in areas that are not designed weep holes, it indicates the wall is saturated and the drainage system may be failing or absent. This is more common in older Oklahoma retaining walls built without proper drainage design.

Warning Sign 4: Bulging in the Middle of the Wall

A localized bulge in the center of a retaining wall (sometimes called “bellying”) indicates a zone of concentrated soil pressure — possibly from a root system, a pocket of saturated soil, or a void that has developed in the drainage layer behind the wall. Bulging walls that are not addressed will eventually fail at the bulge point.

What To Do If You See These Signs in Oklahoma

Do not wait. Retaining wall problems in Oklahoma’s clay soil worsen significantly with each rain event and each freeze-thaw cycle. A wall that is leaning 2 inches this spring may be leaning 5 inches or collapsed by next spring. Call VistaScapes at 918-779-1317 for a free retaining wall assessment at your Broken Arrow or Tulsa property. We evaluate the condition, identify the cause, and provide options ranging from drainage-focused repair to full rebuild.
