Getting Your Oklahoma Outdoor Kitchen Ready for Spring
When spring arrives in Green Country — usually February and March, though Oklahoma will occasionally tease you with a late freeze — it’s time to get your outdoor kitchen back into shape after winter. Here’s a complete spring startup checklist.
Step 1: Inspect the Structure and Surfaces
Walk around your outdoor kitchen with a critical eye:
- Check stone or brick veneer for cracks, chips, or loose sections — Oklahoma’s freeze-thaw cycle can work mortar loose over winter
- Inspect countertop surfaces for cracks, staining, or sealer wear
- Check the concrete pad or paver surface for heaving, cracking, or settled areas
- Inspect any covered patio or pergola structure for wind or ice damage — check fasteners, structural connections, and roofing material
Step 2: Gas System Check
Before firing anything up for the first time in spring:
- Visually inspect all visible gas line connections for any signs of damage
- Open the gas supply valve slowly and check all connections with a soapy water solution — bubbles indicate a leak
- If you smell gas at any point, shut everything off, leave the area, and call your gas provider
- Have a licensed plumber inspect gas connections if you have any doubts — this is not the place to guess
Step 3: Deep Clean the Grill
Even if you covered your grill all winter, a thorough spring cleaning is essential. Oklahoma’s spring brings spiders, wasps, and mud daubers that love to build nests in burner tubes — a blocked burner can cause dangerous flare-ups and uneven cooking.
- Remove and inspect all burners — clear any spider webs or debris from burner ports with a wire brush
- Clean the grease management system thoroughly — winter grease residue combined with spring moisture is a fire risk
- Clean the cooking grates and interior surfaces
- Test ignition on each burner and check for even flame across the full length
Step 4: Restore Water Service
If you winterized your outdoor sink properly:
- Slowly restore water supply at the isolation valve
- Check under the sink for any signs of moisture, which could indicate a slow leak
- Run the faucet for a full minute to flush the line
- Check drain connections and clear any debris
Step 5: Refrigerator and Appliance Startup
Plug in your outdoor refrigerator and let it reach temperature before loading with food (usually 2–4 hours). Clean the interior thoroughly — even covered refrigerators can develop mold in Oklahoma’s humidity. Check door seals for any cracking or gaps that developed during cold weather.
Step 6: Seal and Protect Surfaces
Spring is a great time to reseal any surfaces that need it:
- Granite countertops: Test with a water droplet — if it doesn’t bead, reseal
- Concrete countertops: Apply a fresh coat of penetrating concrete sealer
- Stone veneer: Apply penetrating masonry sealer if you notice water absorption
- Paver patios: Reseal pavers that are fading or showing moisture absorption
