Our Stone Fireplace Construction Process
Foundation and Footing
A properly engineered footing is the foundation of every permanent masonry fireplace. We excavate to frost depth and pour a reinforced concrete footing sized to carry the weight of the entire masonry structure. The footing must be correctly dimensioned — too small and the structure will settle unevenly over time; too shallow and frost heave will crack it.
CMU Block Structure
We build the fireplace body in CMU (concrete masonry unit) block — the same material used in commercial masonry construction. CMU provides the structural mass and stability that holds the refractory firebox, supports the chimney above, and gives the stone veneer a solid, flat substrate to adhere to.
Refractory Firebox and Smoke Chamber
The firebox is lined with refractory (fire) brick rated for sustained high-temperature exposure. Above the firebox, the smoke chamber is built with the correct geometry to collect and accelerate combustion gases upward into the flue. An incorrectly-built smoke chamber is the primary cause of outdoor fireplaces that smoke into the patio.
Stone Veneer Facing
We finish the exterior of the fireplace structure in natural stone veneer — Oklahoma ledgestone, Tennessee crab orchard, split-face limestone, or other natural stone options that complement your home and patio design. The stone is set in Type S mortar with tight, consistent joints. A stone mantel and hearth complete the installation.
