The gas line installation for a Tulsa outdoor kitchen is one of the most consequential infrastructure decisions in the project — and one that must be performed by a licensed gas contractor rather than by a general contractor or homeowner. VistaScapes & Design coordinates gas line installation with licensed plumbers on every outdoor kitchen project and ensures that the gas supply is appropriately sized, properly permitted, and inspected before the kitchen is placed into service.
How an Outdoor Kitchen Gas Line Works
A natural gas outdoor kitchen receives its fuel supply through an underground gas line run from the home’s gas meter or from an existing gas service inside the home to the outdoor kitchen location. The underground line is typically black iron or CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing) in a buried conduit, sized for the total BTU demand of all outdoor kitchen appliances that will run simultaneously. The line surfaces inside the masonry kitchen base through a penetration at the base of the structure, connects to a gas manifold or individual supply connections for each appliance, and provides fuel to the grill, side burner, and any other gas appliances at the kitchen. The licensed plumber who installs the gas line pulls the required permit, performs the pressure test, and coordinates the inspection with ONG or the applicable utility authority. We do not perform gas work ourselves — we coordinate the licensed plumber and schedule their work within the overall construction sequence so that gas rough-in happens before the masonry base is closed up around the supply connections.
Sizing the Gas Line
An outdoor kitchen gas line must be sized to supply the total BTU demand of all gas appliances that may run simultaneously. An outdoor kitchen with a 5-burner grill (60,000 to 90,000 BTU), a side burner (15,000 BTU), and a gas fireplace or fire pit (50,000 to 100,000 BTU) has a substantially higher peak BTU demand than a kitchen with only a grill and side burner. Undersized gas lines result in pressure drop during simultaneous appliance operation — reduced flame height on burners, inconsistent grill performance, and potential appliance shutdown. We communicate the appliance BTU demands to the licensed plumber so that the gas line can be sized correctly for the complete appliance load rather than for a subset.
Propane Systems
Properties without ONG natural gas service use propane as the fuel supply for outdoor kitchens. A propane outdoor kitchen supply uses a tank — 100-pound cylinder for smaller kitchens, 250 to 500-gallon above-ground or buried tank for full kitchen installations — with a regulator and supply line to the kitchen. Propane supply lines require the same licensed gas contractor installation and permitting as natural gas, and the tank placement must meet code setback requirements from structures and property lines. We discuss propane installation requirements and tank placement at the design phase for properties that will use propane supply.
