Oklahoma winters are mild by northern standards but still deliver enough freeze-thaw cycles to damage an outdoor kitchen that hasn’t been properly prepared. A few hours of seasonal maintenance each fall protects your investment and ensures your outdoor kitchen emerges from winter in excellent condition. Here’s the complete winterization guide from the team that builds outdoor kitchens throughout Broken Arrow and the Tulsa metro.
Why Oklahoma Outdoor Kitchens Need Winter Prep
Tulsa County averages around 10-15 freeze events per winter, with temperatures occasionally dipping into the teens. The real damage isn’t the cold itself — it’s the freeze-thaw cycle. Water expands when it freezes; water that has infiltrated masonry, plumbing lines, or appliance components can crack and damage those elements when it freezes and expands. A few simple steps prevent this.
Fall Outdoor Kitchen Winterization Checklist
Appliances
- Deep clean the grill — remove grates, clean burner tubes, clear ash and grease from the firebox. A clean grill winters better and is ready to cook immediately in spring.
- Inspect and cover burner ports — insects love to nest in burner tubes over winter. Install small steel wool plugs in the burner ports or use manufacturer-provided covers.
- Disconnect the igniter battery — if your grill has a battery igniter, remove the battery to prevent corrosion from sitting over winter.
- Close the grill lid fully — but leave a small gap with a block of wood if your grill doesn’t have ventilation holes, to prevent mildew buildup inside.
- Cover all appliances — use fitted, outdoor-rated covers for the grill, side burner, and any surface appliances. Cheap covers crack in Oklahoma cold; invest in quality covers rated for your climate.
Plumbing and Water Features
- Shut off the water supply — locate the supply shutoff for your outdoor kitchen sink and turn it off.
- Drain the supply lines completely — open the sink faucet and let all water drain from the supply line. Even a small amount of standing water can freeze and crack a line or fitting.
- Disconnect the drain P-trap — drain P-traps can hold a small amount of water. Either drain and blow out the trap, add RV antifreeze to the trap water, or disconnect it for winter if the cabinet is accessible.
- Drain ice makers and refrigerators — built-in outdoor ice makers must be fully drained and dried for winter. Most have a drain port; consult your manufacturer’s winterization instructions. Outdoor refrigerators may need the interior dried and door propped open slightly to prevent mold.
Gas System
- Turn off the gas shutoff valve — close the shutoff at the outdoor kitchen, not just at individual appliances.
- Leave main supply on — unless you’re having extended work done on the gas system, leave the main supply line on. Turning it off and on repeatedly can introduce air into the line.
- Inspect connections — fall is a good time to visually inspect all flexible gas connections for cracks or wear before another season of use.
Masonry and Countertops
- Reseal granite and quartzite countertops annually — fall is the ideal time to apply a fresh coat of penetrating sealer. This protects against winter moisture infiltration and prepares the stone for spring.
- Inspect masonry for cracks — look for any cracks in the CMU block or stone veneer that could allow water infiltration. Small cracks filled in fall stay small; ignored, they grow through winter freeze cycles.
- Clean and seal grout lines in stone veneer — masonry grout is porous; a quality masonry sealer on the veneer stone and grout protects against moisture infiltration.
Electrical
- Test GFCI outlets — fall is a good time to test all outdoor GFCI outlets and replace any that have failed.
- Check outdoor lighting fixtures — replace any bulbs and inspect gaskets on wet-rated fixtures for cracking.
- Cover outlets not in use — use weatherproof in-use outlet covers to protect outlets from moisture during winter months.
Spring Startup
When Oklahoma spring arrives — typically March — reverse the winterization process:
- Remove appliance covers and inspect for any winter damage
- Remove burner port plugs
- Reinstall igniter batteries
- Turn on water supply and check for leaks before using
- Reconnect drain P-trap if removed
- Run ice maker through a cleaning cycle before use
- Open gas shutoff valve and leak-test connections with soapy water before lighting
- Fire up the grill and run it on high for 15 minutes to burn off any residue before cooking
