Outdoor kitchen ergonomics — counter heights, seat heights, and clearances — directly affect how comfortable and usable your outdoor kitchen is. Getting these dimensions right during design is much easier than living with the wrong heights after concrete is poured. Here’s a practical guide to outdoor kitchen heights for Broken Arrow projects.
Standard Counter Height: 36 Inches
The cooking and prep zones of an outdoor kitchen should be at 36 inches — the same height as indoor kitchen countertops. This height is designed for standing adults of average height (5’6″–5’10”) to cook comfortably without excessive bending or reaching.
The grill, side burners, refrigerator front face, and prep countertop should all be at 36 inches. This is non-negotiable for comfortable outdoor cooking.
Bar Height: 42 Inches
The serving or seating side of an outdoor kitchen is commonly raised to 42 inches — bar height. This creates a natural social separation: you’re on one side of the bar cooking, your guests are on the other side seated at bar stools. The height difference also hides the mess of the cooking surface from seated guests — they see the counter, not the grill grates.
Bar height is typically only on the serving side — typically 12–18 inches wide with a 10–12 inch knee space below for comfortable bar stool seating.
The Mixed Configuration — Most Popular in Broken Arrow
The most common outdoor kitchen layout we build:
- Back run (grill side): 36-inch counter height — grill, side burner, refrigerator, prep space
- Bar overhang (guest side): 42-inch bar height — extends 12–15 inches over the knee space, seating 3–5 bar stools
- Transition: A step-up in the concrete block structure transitions from 36 to 42 inches; this is designed into the structure during construction and cannot be changed after the fact
Seating Clearances — Design Before You Build
For comfortable seated use at either height:
- Knee space depth: minimum 10 inches, 12–15 inches preferred
- Seat width per person: 24 inches minimum, 26–28 inches for comfortable elbow room
- Seat-to-counter clearance: 10–12 inches between seat surface and counter underside
These clearances determine the bar overhang width and knee space cutout in the concrete block structure. They must be planned during the initial design — not modified after the structure is built.
ADA and Accessibility Considerations
For households with mobility considerations, a 34-inch wheelchair-accessible counter section on at least one run of the outdoor kitchen allows seated cooking access. ADA-accessible outdoor kitchens require 34-inch max counter height, 27-inch knee clearance, and 30-inch width at the accessible section. We can design these accommodations into any outdoor kitchen layout.
